Barbara's Art
I've been working as a sculptor since a visit to Jamaica in 1999 when I learned how to carve wood. Now I do huge pieces for parks and have taught wood carving at Bryn Mawr College and Oberlin College. Below is a huge 200 year old tree, 10 feet tall lying down, that I carved for the Avondale Forest Park in Rathdrum, County Wicklow, Ireland. The mural is 4'x14'. The Greenman face is on the other side of the tree from the mural. It is a Shrine to the Rainforest - the man on the left represents things made from trees and the Goddess on the right represents all the food and medicine we get from trees. As well as oxygen, etc. Huge fungi on the tree let out clouds of spores that looked like smoke. I only had hand chisels with me. Angel corbels for a fireplace, carved out of alder, 5 feet tall. Jizo, Bodhisatva, 6 feet tall out of cedar for the Zen Mountain Center in California. Mother and child, 5 feet tall, Fortuna with cornucopia, 6
